CJ came over today. Couldn't post something yesterday because
Internet was temporarily slain by a thunderstorm. Anyway onto the
flash fiction!
A Photogenic Memory
Some individuals possess a photographic memory. Walter instead had a
photogenic memory. A curious neurological trait where every memory
becomes much more beautiful than it was. Walter could see the worst,
most boring, terrible written movie in the world and he would
remember it quite fondly. And the great movies...well those
experiences were just carved into his mind.
However this only applied to the memory of the experience. Walter
still experienced things as any normal person would. When he would go
to a restaurant and have a horrible meal he would complain and find
it just as bad as the rest of us. But later his photogenic memory
would make it so that the meal could compare to professional chef.
After his death the doctors figured out that his photogenic memory
was linked to short term memory and sleep. When someone sleeps the
brain turns short term memory to long term and this is when his brain
would make everything photogenic.
This was how Walter could live a life with an abusive spouse and
boss and wake up merrily the next day. But a single sleepless night
made him see reality instead of the false picture he'd been painting
for years. Normally no matter how horrific the day before he always
came into the next one smiling. However this time he remembered
everything, processed it, and started to think back to all he
experienced before. And on the day he without sleep when he longer
lied to his own memories he committed suicide.
